Ankle Pain

Common Causes of Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can arise from various conditions, including sprains, strains, fractures, tendinopathy and arthritis. Understanding the cause is crucial for effective treatment.

Determining whether you need treatment for your ankle pain depends on pathology, the severity and the nature of your symptoms. Even seemingly minor symptoms can benefit from assessment. Our skilled physiotherapists will assess your ankle and recommend an individualised treatment plan to address your unique needs and achieve your goals.

Physiotherapy offers a holistic approach to treating ankle pain. Our expert physiotherapists use a combination of manual therapy, rehabilitation, education and sometimes extrocoporeal shockwave therapy to alleviate pain and improve strength and confidence. Treatment plans are individualised based on the underlying cause of your pain and your treatment goals.

Sessions are 45 or 30 minutes for the assessment depending on the complexity and 30 minutes for subsequent follow up sessions. Our goal is to provide gold standard, efficient and effective care. Our physiotherapists will work with you to establish realistic timelines and milestones to facilitate your recovery.

The number of physiotherapy sessions required depends on the individual and the complexity of the ankle condition. During your initial assessment, our physiotherapists will discuss a treatment plan with you, including the anticipated number of sessions. Regular, collaborative re-evaluations will ensure that the treatment plan evolves according to your progress.

While not every case of ankle pain requires an X-ray, it can be a valuable diagnostic tool in certain situations. If our physiotherapists suspect a fracture or other underlying issues, they may recommend imaging to obtain a clearer picture of your ankle injury. Diagnostic decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. We also offer Ultrasound Imaging at our clinic, led by our Specialist Physiotherapist and Sonographer Matt Prout, which is often an appropriate and accurate way of diagnosing many ankle conditions.

Further to this, our Physiotherapists have referral rights for private MRI scans if required.
