Knee Pain

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain can result from a range of conditions, including ligament sprains, tendinopathies, damage to the menisci, bursitis, patellofemoral pain and arthritis. Understanding the root cause is vital for developing an individualised treatment plan.

If you have knee pain, or it locks or gives way, seeking professional advice is recommended. Ignoring persistent pain may lead to long-term issues. Our physiotherapists will assess your condition and recommend an appropriate course of action tailored to your specific needs and treatment goals.

Physiotherapy offers a holistic approach to treating knee pain. Our skilled physiotherapists use a combination of exercises, manual therapy, education and sometimes more specialist services which we offer including knee bracing, ultrasound guided injection therapy or extracorporeal shockwave therapy to alleviate pain, improve mobility and increase confidence. Treatment plans are individualised based on the underlying cause and your treatment goals.

Knee pain can stem from various underlying conditions, making an accurate diagnosis crucial for effective treatment. Our experienced physiotherapists employ a thorough assessment process and diagnostic techniques to identify the cause of your pain. This may involve a detailed medical history, physical examination, and possibly diagnostic imaging.

Sessions are 45 or 30 minutes for the assessment depending on the complexity and 30 minutes for subsequent follow up sessions. The duration of treatment varies depending on the condition and severity of your symptoms. Our goal is to provide effective, efficient care and our physiotherapists will collaborate with you to establish realistic expectations and milestones throughout your recovery journey.

The number of physiotherapy sessions required depends on the individual and the complexity of the ankle condition. During your initial assessment, our physiotherapists will discuss a treatment plan with you, including the anticipated number of sessions. Regular, collaborative re-evaluations will ensure that the treatment plan evolves according to your progress.

Not all cases of knee pain require imaging. In many instances, a detailed clinical assessment by a physiotherapist is sufficient for diagnosis. However, if our physiotherapists suspect a more serious condition or injury, or if your symptoms persist, they may recommend imaging to obtain a clearer picture of the cause of your pain and to rule out sinister pathology. Our Physiotherapists have referral rights for private MRI scans if required.

Understanding whether surgery is required for your condition often requires a comprehensive evaluation by a physiotherapist. Physiotherapy can play a significant role in managing your knee pain, potentially alleviating symptoms and reducing the need for surgery. If your symptoms are significantly affecting your mobility and everyday life, surgery may be appropriate. It’s important to discuss this with your physiotherapist to be able to make an informed decision as to the best plan of action to take.
