Elbow Pain

Common Causes of Elbow Pain

Elbow pain can result from a range of conditions, including Tennis elbow (Lateral Epicondylalgia), Golfers elbow (Medial Epicondylalgia), tendinopathy, muscle strains, ligament sprains, fractures, and arthritis. Understanding the cause is vital for developing an individualised treatment plan.

If you have elbow pain, seeking professional advice is recommended. Ignoring persistent pain may lead to long-term issues. Determining whether you need treatment for your elbow pain depends on pathology, the severity and the nature of your symptoms. Our physiotherapists will assess your condition and recommend an appropriate course of action tailored to your specific needs and treatment goals.

Physiotherapy offers a holistic approach to treating elbow pain. Our skilled physiotherapists use a combination of exercise, manual therapy, education and sometimes extracorpoereal shockwave therapy to alleviate pain, improve mobility and increase confidence. Treatment plans are individualised based on the underlying cause of your pain and your treatment goals.

Elbow pain can stem from various underlying conditions, making an accurate diagnosis important for effective treatment. Our experienced physiotherapists employ a thorough assessment process to identify the cause of your pain. This may involve a detailed medical history, physical examination, and possibly diagnostic imaging.

Sessions are 45 or 30 minutes for the assessment depending on the complexity and 30 minutes for subsequent follow up sessions. The duration of treatment varies depending on the nature and severity of your symptoms. Our goal is to provide gold standard, effective, efficient care and our physiotherapists will work with you to establish realistic expectations and milestones to facilitate your recovery.

The number of physiotherapy sessions required depends on the individual and the complexity of the elbow condition. During your initial assessment, our physiotherapists will discuss a treatment plan with you, including the anticipated number of sessions. Regular, collaborative re-evaluations will ensure that the treatment plan evolves according to your progress.

In many instances, a detailed clinical assessment by a physiotherapist is sufficient for diagnosis of elbow pain. However, if our physiotherapists suspect a more serious condition or if your symptoms persist, they may recommend imaging to obtain a clearer picture of the cause of your symptoms and to rule out sinister pathology. We also offer Ultrasound Imaging at our clinic, led by our Specialist Physiotherapist and Sonographer Matt Prout, which is often an appropriate and accurate way of diagnosing various elbow conditions. Further to this, our Physiotherapists have referral rights for private MRI scans if required.
